Family First Health hands out free apples for “Starts With Apples” campaign

WHEN

Noon to 1 p.m.

WHAT
Family First Health will host a pop-up Apple Handout Station in York’s Continental Square on Tuesday, Oct. 20 as part of its monthlong “Starts With Apples” campaign. Along with the apples, staff and volunteers will be handing out information on how to take control of your health.

October marks National Health Literacy Month and National Apple Month, which Family First Health is celebrating with the message that good health Starts With Apples, but the rest is up to you — ultimately, you need to be an active partner in your health care.

Health literacy is the ability to understand health information and make good decisions about your health, from preventative care to healthy food choices that go beyond the confines of the doctor’s office. For 45 years, Family First Health has been dedicated to connecting with the community to encourage improved health literacy and improved overall health.

BACKGROUND
The public can visit www.startswithapples.com for more information on becoming health literate and working with their health care team, and employers can download a free, digital “Get Healthy At Work” kit including posters, a health pledge and a templated award for employees committed to their health.

CPBJ: Dr. Wanda Filer named president of American Academy of Family Physicians

Today, a York-based family physician is taking on the role of president at the American Academy of Family Physicians.

The AAFP represents 120,900 physicians and medical students nationwide.

Dr. Wanda D. Filer was first chosen as president-elect of the AAFP in October 2014. As president of the AAFP, she will advocate on behalf of family physicians and patients for positive change in the U.S. health care system.

York Dispatch: Family First Health receives Affordable Care Act funding

In a recent announcement by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Family First Corp. has been named one of 1,184 health centers across the country to receive grant funding to improve and expand their services.

Family First, which has a location in downtown York at 116 South George St., was awarded $307,066 of the $500 million in Affordable Care Act funding doled out to nonprofit and public health centers. Family First CEO Jenny Englerth said the federal funding will be used primarily for behavioral health services.

York Sunday News: Celebrating National Health Center Week

In light of the recent changes with the Affordable Care Act, more Americans have health insurance coverage these days, both here in Pennsylvania and across the United States. But a serious health care problem persists — a shortage of places that provide primary care and preventative services to those who need them most.

A key part of the solution lies in community health centers. Nationwide, these centers serve more than 23 million Americans. That means one in every 15 people living in the United States depends on a health center for care.

York Dispatch: Breast-feeding moms in York County to catch a break at work

Life will get a little easier for breast-feeding moms who work at eight York County offices.

York City’s health bureau announced Friday that it is distributing funds from a $50,000 grant to the eight locations for installation of private rooms or kiosks, including Family First Health’s George Street Center.

Founded in response to the York Charrette and as one of the nation’s first community health centers, it began as a way to address the health care needs of underserved populations.
