Family First Health to Offer Free Screening of “The Waiting Room”
Documentary screening to celebrate National Health Center Week.

YORK, PA (August 9, 2013)—Family First Health is proud to announce they will be hosting a free screening of the buzz-worthy documentary, “The Waiting Room,” on Tuesday, August 13 at York Little Theater. The doors will open at 5:00 pm, with opening remarks at 6:20 pm and the screening beginning at 6:30 pm.

THE WAITING ROOM is a character-driven documentary film that uses extraordinary access to go behind the doors of an American Public Hospital struggling to care for a community of largely uninsured patients. The film – using a blend of cinema verité and characters’ voiceover – offers a raw, intimate, and even uplifting look at how patients, staff and caregivers each cope with disease, bureaucracy and hard choices.

This free screening is being offered in celebration of National Health Center Week 2013 (NHCW) to showcase the multitude of ways in which America’s Health Centers are actively changing, improving and innovating the health of their communities from August 11 – 17. This year’s theme is, “Celebrating America’s Health Centers: Transforming Healthcare in our Local Communities.”

The screening is sponsored by CompuGroup Medical.

To get (free) tickets for the screening, visit familyfirsthealthwaiting-eac2.eventbrite.com.

For more information about the film, visit www.whatruwaitingfor.com.

Family First Health to Participate in National Health Center Week

Central PA (August 9, 2013) – Family First Health will participate in National Health Center Week 2013 (NHCW) to showcase the multitude of ways in which America’s Health Centers are actively changing, improving and innovating the health of their communities from August 11 – 17. This year’s theme is, “Celebrating America’s Health Centers: Transforming Healthcare in our Local Communities.”

As part of the weeklong events, Family First Health is giving tours to local legislators, and offering a free showing of “The Waiting Room,” a character-driven documentary film that goes behind the doors of an American public hospital struggling to care for a community of largely uninsured patients. Family First Health will also host an information table when the York Revolution take on the Camden Riversharks on Wednesday, August 14.

“Health Centers deliver high quality, cost effective, accessible care, keeping communities healthy and productive,” said Jenny Englerth, CEO of Family First Health. “The cost of care at a health center is affordable, but the quality is as good as any one finds in private practices—and studies prove it.”

According to the National Association of Community Health Centers, Health centers serve as the medical and health care home for 22.3 million people nationally—a number that is quickly growing. Currently, there are more than 9,000 locations across the country.

“Health centers employ nearly 10,000 physicians and more than 6,300 nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and certified nurse midwives, along with social workers, case managers, and community health workers,” said Englerth. “This is all part of a multi-faceted clinical team designed to treat the whole patient, organizing care and managing chronic disease, at the same time decreasing unnecessary, preventable and wasteful use of health resources.”

Family First Health has five locations throughout Central Pennsylvania (York, Gettysburg, Lewisberry and Hanover). The public can learn more about Community Health Center Week at www.healthcenterweek.org for more information on Family First Health, visit online at https://www.familyfirsthealth.org/ and Like them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/FamilyFirstHealth.

HIV Testing at Family First Health: York Dentist Advisory

June 6, 2013—The Pennsylvania Department of Health (DOH) is advising all current and former patients of a York County dentist they might be at risk for infection after an investigation discovered the dental facility did not follow appropriate infection control procedures. DOH is recommending Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV testing for current or former patients who had dental procedures performed by Dr. Jacqueline A. Marcin, located at 1820 E. Market St. in York. Concerned patients of Dr. Marcin should contact their primary care provider for access to these tests.

Family First Health offers free walk-in HIV testing for patients and non-patients alike. Hepatitis B and C tests are offered to current Family First Health patients only.

A special, toll-free hotline has been set up by the Department of Health for this investigation. Dr. Marcin’s patients can call 1-855-265-4613 for more information or can visit the DOH website.

Family First Health Providers Telling Patients “Eat Your Greens!”

IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Family First Health Providers Telling Patients “Eat Your Greens!”

Community health center shares health tips on making fruits and vegetables part of the conversation with your doctor and dentist.

Central PA (March 16, 2013) –Family First Health, a community health center in York and Adams Counties, is encouraging patients to make fruits and veggies part of the discussion with their doctor and dentist. Through a series of events called “Eat Your Greens,” Family First Health is prescribing a healthier lifestyle to patients and non-patients alike.

Studies have shown that cost efficiencies in health care coverage can be attained by proactive health habits, like a well-balanced diet and high intake of fruits and vegetables. A major study by National Institutes of Health showed a 58 percent reduction in new cases of diabetes over five years with just a very modest lifestyle and diet intervention with a 5 percent weight loss.

“Having people take better care of themselves is one of the best ways of reducing the costs of health care coverage,” says Jenny Englerth, CEO of Family First Health. “We want our patients to know that they can be an active partner in their health by talking with their doctor or dentist about their diet.”

The public can visit FamilyFirstHealth.org/greens for more information on the benefits of eating a healthy diet and some myth-busting facts on healthy eating and budget. Follow Family First Health on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/FamilyFirstHealth.

Any contribution, in any amount that is most comfortable for you, makes an impact on the 20,000 community members of York and Adams counties that we provide medical, dental, and social services to throughout the year.

Why is access to medical care important? Well, ask Antron, a third grader who had dental insurance coverage but could not get an appointment to see a dentist. No matter how hard his mom tried, she could not get Antron a dental appointment to take care of his worsening tooth pain. Every office that she called which accepted their insurance plan told her they were not taking new patients.

Because Antron did not have access to dental care, he was often in the school nurse’s office for terrible tooth pain from these untreated dental problems. He was unable to focus in his classes. His dental problems restricted his diet until he could only eat foods that were not too hot or cold. Antron could not function — he was in too much pain.

One of our Family First Health Dentists saw Antron for a dental screening we held at his school. There, the dentist saw right away why Antron was in so much pain — four of his teeth needed to be pulled, four had cavities and there were also several abscesses. Without prompt dental care, Antron could be on the path to developing severe medical complications from these untreated dental problems.

Thanks to the Family First Health dental outreach program, we swiftly transitioned Antron into dental care at our school-based health center, where, with his mother’s permission, he began to receive treatment during school hours. This convenient scheduling removed another barrier to his ability to get care.

Today, because Antron finally has access to the dental care he needs, he is a healthy, happy third grader free from tooth pain. Antron’s little brother is starting dental care with us before he develops any serious dental problems.

Swift access to medical care helps people get the care they need when they need it, and preventative services stop problems before they start. We’re proud to have provided these services.

Please help children like Antron today. With your donation, we can continue to provide high-quality medical, dental and social services to those who need it most.
